How to Write an Effective Conclusion for Your Essay or Thesis

When you write an essay, dissertation or thesis, you might be a bit confused as to how to write a good conclusion. Unfortunately, most people do not realize the importance of a good conclusion. The introduction is a most important part of the content. The Conclusion is in fact more important than the introduction.

Conclusion is the Gist of the Body:

Before starting to write a conclusion for your essay or thesis, you need to know how important the conclusion is. Suppose the body of your dissertation or thesis is spread over an expanse of 50 pages. Another person is interested to read and assess the suitability of the content for some purpose of them. Here they would want to assess the suitability of the material beforehand by having a glimpse of it. In such situations, such users would go through the conclusion mainly. Also, they would read the conclusion along with the introduction. Thus, if the conclusion cannot reflect the true quality of the body, they might be misled and hence they may reject the thesis. Most people read the conclusion first and then the body of the thesis.

Conclusion should be of Moderate Length:

Depending on the length of the body, the conclusion can be of varying length. If the essay or dissertation is of moderate length, the conclusion can be approximately of one-tenth of the body. But if the thesis runs in to dozens of pages, it would be better to confine the conclusion to the limit of one to three pages. If it is an essay or short narration running in to a few pages, the conclusion can be of one paragraph of moderate length. If suitable, it can be of two paragraphs also.

Conclusion of an Essay or Short Narrative:

As already stated while you start to write a good conclusion for your essay, you should know that it should be of the length of an ordinary paragraph of 4 or 5 sentences. The first sentence should introduce the topic. The second, third and fourth should give the main thoughts in the body of the essay. The final sentence should really conclude not only the conclusion, but the entire topic. There should be organic unity and logical cohesiveness throughout the conclusion.

Conclusion of a Thesis or Lengthy Narrative:

In order to write a good conclusion for your thesis or a lengthy narrative, you should take into consideration the length of the thesis. Usually, the length of a thesis would be of dozens of pages. In that case, the conclusion can run to two to three pages. It can be divided in to long paragraphs. The first paragraph of the conclusion should be introducing the topic of investigation. The subsequent paragraphs can give in brief the method of investigation. Next the findings of the investigation can be given. The final paragraph should conclude both the conclusion and the thesis itself.
