Successful Interview Techniques

Amongst the common interview questions, “why are you interested to join us?” is often asked by interviewers. You need to know the successful interview techniques, tricks and tactics to answer this type of questions. I am detailing these guidelines for your easy preparation and success in job interviews. What I am stating is the gleaned wisdom of experience that I have had first as a candidate who appeared before no less than 278 interview boards and later in life as a member on the interview board and interviewed tens of thousands of candidates. The primary purpose behind such a query is to assess and ascertain whether you are serious about the choice. This is very pertinent since the candidate’s level of interest will be directly linked to their commitment to the organization. Hence, during the interview preparations pay adequate attention to such type of questions.

Study the Profile of the Organization:

When you prepare for the common interview questions like “why are you interested to join us?” that will asked in your forthcoming interview, first of all make a detailed study of the new organization with respect to its management, territories of operation, personnel strength, product line, history of growth, position in the market, rival brands, latest policies, etc. You need to acquire successful interview techniques. Organizational information you can gather through the media, the Internet, the Organization’s published materials, product profiles and brochures and the like. Alongside, you can gather information from the employees of the organization. This will stand you in good stead during the interview. Having gathered sufficient information about the organization, you should form an image in your mind about the organization constituting the gathered information.

Align your Strengths with the Profile of the Organization:

In your preparation for the common interview question “why are you interested to join us?” first you have to gather sufficient information about the organization touching the multiple aspects. Then study the profile of the organization vis-à-vis your profile as detailed in your resume. Try to align the core competences in your profile with the operational requirements of the new organization. Place yourself in a dynamic role in the new organization. Think how you could be an asset to the organization in its growth. While answering this common interview question, point some positive aspect of the organization that could afford you room for further growth. Suppose you are an engineering graduate in the electronic stream and the line of operation of your current or previous organization does not require you to be in the mainstream management. But the new organizations major thrust area is electronics. Here you can say, “my present organization is good, but their product line is not mainly related to electronics. As I am an electronics engineer, my career advancement cannot be much hopeful there. But here, as the organization’s major thrust area is electronics, I find this organization a place where I can put in my best effort and can scale organizational hierarchy fast.” This answer is based on cogent reasoning and is sure to impress the board.

Avoid Answers That Are Not Based on Proper Reasoning:

While answering common interview questions like “why are you interested to join us?” be careful not to give answers like “currently I am jobless”, or “I need a job.” Or again, the answer may be “I am under financial constraints and commitments and hence I need a job.” This is not proper answer. You need to employ successful interview techniques. There are some interview tricks and tactics which can help you through the interview. The cited answers suggest that you are not career-oriented, rather you are motivated by subsistence compulsions or financial constraints. Business organizations are after all business organizations where profitable operation is the motto. Charity has only a second. What the interviewer is looking for is career-oriented, competent workforce. Support you answer with proper reasoning, career-orientation and professional commitment and objectivity.

References may be Helpful:

When you answer the common interview question “why are you interested to join us?” you can give the name of some references. That is, such and such persons have told you that this organization is ideal for in such respects. You can refer the names of persons belonging to other organizations or persons known to the management. You can also refer employees of the same organization. But before referring anyone you need to satisfy two things. First, the persons you think of referring should be contacted and should be told of your intention to refer them to the new organization. Secondly, if the person you want to refer is an employee or ex-employee or the organization, they should be successful in their career. Again, if you are referring anyone outside the organization, they should be in the good opinion of the organization. References otherwise are bound to impress negatively.
